About Highlands
Our highly regarded child care center was founded in the
early 90s by community families concerned about the lack
of high-quality child care in Northeast Los Angeles. Parent
involvement is one of the important factors which led to
Highlands being named one of
the top ten best practices child care centers
in Los Angeles County after a multi-year study by
the UCLA Graduate School of Education.
Our Philosophy
Our center provides a rich
and nurturing
environment which builds self-esteem
and confidence.
We respect each childs individuality and uniqueness.
We work with children to encourage understanding and respect
for diversity in relating to others.
Play
is valued and encouraged at Highlands. Children learn
best when they are motivated by their own curiosity and
innate desire to discover,
know and understand. We encourage children to explore, experiment,
ask questions, initiate
activities and solve
problems in a way appropriate to their age and stage
of development.
Environment
The Highlands Preschool and Childcare Center sits high above
the historic Arroyo Seco sharing a tree-lined campus with
Hathaway
Family Resource Center. Highlands has been located at
this beautiful preschool site with its two architect-designed
play yards since 1995.
Highlands provides full- and part-time
customized childcare for Mount Washington, Highland Park,
Eagle Rock, South Pasadena and Pasadena and surrounding
communities in Northeast Los Angeles. We are conveniently
located in an easy to reach residential area easily accessible
from the 110 freeway between Pasadena and downtown L.A.
Our Staff
Highlands teachers and are staff are committed to
meeting the needs of children by providing challenging and
fun opportunities for physical, social and cognitive growth.
The Centers caring staff has extensive experience
and training in early childhood education. Many have been
with Highlands since it was opened in 1992. The Centers
Director is also well-respected and has valuable experience
and expertise in the field of child development.
The Centers staff is multilingual,
speaking English, Spanish and Chinese. Highlands is a non-profit°
preschool and community-based child care center, serving
children of all cultural, income and ethnic backgrounds,
family structures, and religions.
About the Capacity and
Schedule of the Center
Number
of children at Highlands
Our center is licensed to care for 45 to 55 children between
one and a half to six years of age. Children gather in difference
classrooms according to age and developmental stages. They
are grouped by bird names: Bluebirds,
Golden Eagles and
Parakeets. We have numerous options
available to customize a schedule that is best for your
childs development.

holidays, from 7:30 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.
The preschool program and its curricular
activites take place from 9 a.m. to noon.
Before and after-school
care is available from 7:30-11:30 a.m. and from

available for children enrolled in preschools, Kindergarten
and first grade in neighborhood public and private schools.
The Center van provides transportation between schools and
Highlands.
Enrollment
and Recruitment
Recruitment takes place throughout the year. If the number
of families who apply exceeds the number of slots available,
preference will be given to those children who will be ready
for kindergarten the following year. This way the child
will have a year of preschool experience prior to entering
kindergarten (for which they are eligible if they are five
years old on December 2).
Although our recruitment efforts focus
mainly on meeting the needs of families who reside or work
in communities of the Northeast Los Angeles area, we welcome
children and families from other areas who believe their
child may benefit from high quality child care at Highlands.
